To Catch A Desi Predator (perhaps NSFW)

June 12, 2010

Disclaimer: The information in this blogpost is entirely taken from publicly available record, and I have no intent to malign anyone.

Dateline’s To Catch A Predator is one of my guilty pleasures. For the initiated, it was a Reality Program, hosted by Chris Hansen, which set up a sting operation around sexual predators who targeted underage teenagers. The producers employ a vigilante group called Perverted Justice, and set up a sting operation with the help of local police. Perverted Justice’s Volunteers go on online chatrooms and pretend to be 12-14 year olds, and get in touch with adults over there. These volunteers then invite the willing members to their house, which is littered with TV cameras. The baits, who are paid actors, call the guys in and then after a bit of flirtation, the host comes out and confronts the guys. After an awkward, sometimes really hilarious, confrontation, these individuals are asked to leave the house. However, the police come in with all guns blazing, once they are out of the house. The individuals are arrested, and then charged under various state laws. Essentially, these people are screwed.

I realize that it is really sad that we are giving into our sadistic tendencies when we are watching someone’s life going down the drain. I’m not proud of myself here, but this thing is addictive. So it became a bit of an obsession of mine to look out for Desi (and Arab) guys on these shows, and oh boy, there were more than a few!

The desi angel fascinates me because the big clash of culture is evident in their actions. In our desi societies, the minors are not well protected, by the law enforcing agencies as well as in the Western world, and sometimes they are seen as fair games. Of course, under the Islamic Law an individual is considered mature when they hit puberty. Also, the males in the society, more or less go, scot-free if there’s a scandal between two people. The females in these scandals generally suffer more, in many aspects. Hence, the men tend to be more carefree, and there’s a culture of bravado (Remember that Living on the Edge rape claim!). So, when the tables are turned on them, in this foreign setting, the desis realize that they are in a shit-storm.

Now, coming back to the show, if you watch the show then don’t follow up on the relevant Perverted Justice website for a detailed follow-up and the entire chat log: I would consider you an amateur! Yes, the entire chatlogs ARE available on their website. However, in the spirit of presenting an extensive research, I’ve went through a few hours of Youtube videos, and hence presenting to you, To Catch A Desi Predator. The result is a set of videos which cover caste, creed, religion, nationalities from the South Asian diaspora, and not to mention the couple of Arab guys.

But before we start, the program is indeed very controversial, which has resulted in one death of a Assistant Disctrict Attorney in Texas when he committed suicide when he realized that what he got himself into. Also the dramatic arrests, when the “predators” are coming out of the house, are more or less geared to get some good TV. No one needs to be tazed, or the Police officers don’t need to be in camouflage to take out unarmed suspects. But again, it makes for some riveting TV.

So here it is! My Top 3 Desi Predator Videos:

3. SPAKI786, 24 – Orange County, California

Spaki786’s actual name is Maroof Farooq, and I have a strong sense that he’s Pakistani. The nickname with a “paki” and “786”, points towards that assertion of mine. Now his modus operandi is the oddest and creepiest I’ve seen. He went to the house with two of his friends, and he sent in a 15yo to check what the situation was. Classic desi launda behavior, I must say.

Mr. Farooq might have been deported already, but he got three years probation, lifetime sex offender registration, sixty days of picking up garbage along the freeway and a year of sexual assault counseling. (Perverted Justice Link)

And just look at this picture!

Oh man, he is a stud! Ladies you CAN get studs like him on the internet! I’m so jealous!! And if you read his chat log, you’ll know that he’s such a romantic!

2. Crazitrini85, 22 – Coconut Creek, Florida

Crazitrini85’s actual name is Marvin Lakhan, and he was such a stud that he walked in and just stripped down. It is one of the most hilarious encounters,  because he had to sit there naked while the  host spells out loud what he wanted his bait to do, i.e. “perform sexual acts on her cat”. The poor guy had to sit there and listen to his most private perverted ideas being broadcasted on national television.

Mr. Lakhan would be serving a 5 year suspended sentence, and would be a lifetime registrant as a sex offender. (Perverted Justice Link)

1. Tennisboy213, 25 and slave2mistresses, 31 – Flagler Beach, Florida

In one of the rarest cases, by chance, two guys came in at the same time. The first is Sarfraz Khan (tennisboy213) is a desi, and the second one is Yazan Asfour (slave2mistresses) is Jordanian. While Sarfraz knows what he got himself into, Yazan has no idea. Classic moments in this video are all related to Mr. Asfour

  1. He has the cutest facial expression when Sarfraz tells him “Dude, we are getting arrested
  2. He had to sit through a detailed list of what he wanted to do with the girl, and with a name like salve2mistresses, you can imagine what it would be. No one wants their sadistic, nasty, fetishes to be read out to them by a news reporter, in front of random people. Also, “tennisboy213, meet slave2mistresses”.
  3. Mr. Asfour explaining to the police that he’s an angel: “Many girls want me to have sex with me .. but I swear Im a virgin..  I swear by god

Mr. Khan was sentenced to (partly he was an idiot and he talked a lot in the interrogation room) got fifteen months in jail followed by a special five years sex offender probation term and a lifetime on the sex offender registry. (Perverted Justice Link). As for Mr. Yazan Asfour, he skipped bail and is currently wanted by the law enforcing authorities (Perverted Justice Link).

However, being thorough, there is a repertoire of other desi men on the show.

Puki_007us and Iamkanishk – Petaluma, California

They made sure they got their sandwiches that they brought, when they were going out! Truly Desi! (Link)

Longbeachdude19 – Long Beach, California (Don’t Taze Me Bro Edition)

Qays Mahjoob’s case was almost too boring to consider, until he got tazed i.e.

He got 3 Years formal probation, sixty days of Caltrans cleanup, must submit DNA sample and will register as a sex offender for life (Link).

Sst83 – Long Beach, California

Satinder Thind is a stud! Not only he had a blingy car, “a penthouse with an amazing view”, but he also was a cool customer. After his confrontation, he just asks Chris Hansen when the show would be on. Also another gem during the confrontation:

Chris (reading Thind his chatlog): “You said, “Oh I’m gonna lick you””.

Thind: “Oh, I say that a lot”.

Thind received three years probation, sixty days caltrans cleanup and lifetime registration as a sex offender. (Link).

Guy_from_mars_83 – Riverside, California

“You have to catch me in the act to put me against the law”

Inderjeet Singh was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 36 months probation, significant fines, registration as a sex offender, sex offender treatment, and a very long list of restrictions including submitting a DNA sample, submitting to random searches, and not associating with minors or visiting areas where minors congregate. (Link) Also, Note to self: Be good, because Jail isn’t kind!

Blondy91972 – Flagler Beach, Florida

Ah Yeah! Egyptians! Represent!

Abdallah: “Never, Ever. You know I’m Egyptian, I’m Muslim. I will never do this stuff”

Chris (reading him his chat log): “I will lick you all over”

He skipped bail and is wanted (Link)

Mannbay2004 – California

Chris: “It’s against the law”

Mannbay2004: “OH!”

He received three months jail, three years probation, registration as a sex offender and sexual offender counseling. (Link)

Indianman76 – San Jose, California

“Oh, my friend was online. He did it!”

Anurag Tawari got 24 months of conditional probation, 200 hours of volunteer work, various fines of differing amounts and restricted from social or computer contact with minors. All in all, justice served even though it took a while. (Link)

Lovesource7 – Flagler Beach Florida (Nepali Grad Student)

Farzadboy2003 – Anaheim, California

Ah yeah! Iranians! Represent!

Farzad: “I don’t speak English very good. I didn’t mean that”

Chris: “But you said, I want to bleep your bleep. That’s quite universal, isn’t it?”

Farzad got three years probation, sixty days of picking up garbage, registered as a sex offender and all the many, many restrictions that come with that, and maybe deported. (Link)

Cognizance26 – Petaluma, California

Relish!

    Dishoom-ji,
You’ve outdone yourself! First off, love your disclaimer, it makes me feel better. I am not familiar with the “Living on the Edge rape claim” you reference. I think you hit the nail on the head about what makes these cases particularly fascinating: the big clash of culture. I wonder if some of the Perverted Justice’s Volunteers are actually perverts themselves. I bet some of the offenders would really like that type of community service vs. cleaning up along the highways. On a side note, I do enjoy honking and waving as well as giving a big smile at my friends doing community service as I drive past. Try it if you don’t already do it. You may also like to yell out, “Who’s the bitch now Mu$%a F&$#er!?” I wonder if I ever honked at Maroof picking up garbage along the freeway? Anyway, I love this quote, ‘if you watch the show then don’t follow up on the relevant Perverted Justice website for a detailed follow-up and the entire chat log: I would consider you an amateur!” LOL, I’ve just gone from amateur to professional, yet I don’t necessarily know if that’s a good thing. These dudes are BAHUT sick. SO stupid too, since not a lot of 14 year old girls chat like male perverts. That should have been their first clue. Duh! I really like the benevolence of Cognizance26, I can’t believe he was mistakenly arrested, he was just trying to help, what a shame, but sometimes the justice system fails us. 😉 In the case of tennisboy213 vs. t slave2mistresses, I think if I had to choose which I’d prefer to be the fugitive, it would be Sarfraz instead of Yazan, even though Yasan is a virgin. You’ve done excellent job gathering information and I am a new fan of the Desi-Arab-Middle Eastern angle. I knew eventually my undergraduate in cultural anthropology would come in handy. I’m an admitted culture vulture, and not I just need to apply to volunteer at perverted justice! Should you do a follow up story, you’ll have lots of material since the current perverted justice site’s most wanted fugitives list is Desi-Arab-Middle Eastern heavy based on glancing at the naams, looks like 9/12 to me, with a possible 10/12:

@uglyshoecase: Waisay I think the spaki786 would have been nastier!

@sitaji: Woah! What a response!! I truly enjoy somebody who indulged in this murky world as I did! Volunteering for Perverted-Justice! Thats sounds like such a hoot! We can sit down, talk dirty to strangers, and then sit back and enjoy them getting effed off! All for helping the community! Im seriously considering this now 😛 And Cultural Anthropology? I thought my undergrad was useless 🙂 Just kidding!!!

The Living on The Edge rape claim was in reference to this guy who came to the audition for the show, like MTV roadies. The host asked the guy what was the most daring thing he did, and the guy proclaimed that he raped a girl.. and then things got ugly. Threats, but that kind of spiked the ratings.

Great post! You hit the nail on the head! A few people commented about how there were a disproportionate amount of South Asian men on the shows.

    1) You are right it is a cultural issue.
    2) Child molestation is not illegal in India. I heard that 78% of Indian children have been molested (and this is the figure for children, not girls. If the stats are the same as in the west (2 girls are molested for every body that gets molested) I’m guessing the figure for girls must be over 90%)
    3) Most of the desi guys on this show were after confronted about what they were trying to do, seemed to feel little shame, guilt or remorse over what they had done, and were often quite sure that they would get away with it (Singh was a good example, “You can’t charge me for anything, I know I didn’t break any laws).
    4) Sadly often desi guys tried to blame it on the women, and used the defence of “She wanted it.” and they were pretty much the only ones to use the “She said she wasn’t a virgin” argument as if underage girls don’t deserve protection. *shakes head*

Best show in the history of tv! Love how these shows are run over and over for years. Will make sure that every person these guys ever encounter will know what dirty pervs they are.

  7. June 30, 2012 6:07 am

Curious about the desi pervs I saw on the show, I did a search and found this — exactly what I was looking for! You are very funny. You know the world needs a Desi comedian, you would be a good candidate!

I enjoyed your article and the topic was right on. In desi and arab/mid-east culture, women and girls are coveted for their safety. This means that perverted lonely men seek out young boys for sex, and its usually relatives that they molest. It was the same in Irag, when my friend served in the army. He despised the groups of shady looking young men who hung out on street corners.

July 2014 he contacts me (I am a dominatrix) and send me photos of himself naked with cucumbers jammed up his ass. Fucking freaks! He lives in Jordan with his parents.
